BEIJING, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi said on Friday that what has happened shows that no obstacle is insurmountable for China and the United States, and the key lies in a true commitment to mutual respect, equality and seeking common ground while shelving differences.
China firmly opposes the blatant act of bullying and will continue to facilitate greater opening-up. With its predicable and coherent policies, China will provide more opportunities through high-quality development for businesses seeking an open, fair, just and non-discriminatory environment. With sympathy and empathy, China has offered substantial assistance to the epidemic-stricken United States in terms of anti-virus supplies, and has supported and facilitated U.S. procurement of medical supplies in China, Wang said at a press briefing in response to comments made by U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad on Thursday.
"From the outset of the normalization process, China-U.S. relations have always been based on the common understanding that both sides recognize and respect each other's different social system," said Yang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee.
The article titled "How China Controlled the Coronavirus" is written by Peter Hessler, who was teaching and learning in Chengdu, the capital of China's Sichuan Province, during the pandemic.
"I believe there are sectors in the United States that are very concerned about China's growth and competitiveness in various fields," said the diplomat.
"With all due respect, I very often hear people in this country say this is something universal. But when they say universal, it's mainly the United States and a couple of European countries," said the ambassador, responding to another question about "an almost universally held criticism of China (on Xinjiang)."
Hessler noted that some public health experts affirmed the participation of the neighborhood committees in epidemic prevention and contact tracing. The Chinese lockdown was more intense than almost anywhere else in the world. Neighborhood committees, the most grassroots level of Communist Party organization, enforced the rules.
"We urge the United States to stop acting with arrogance and prejudice, but enter into constructive dialogue with us on an equal footing," Wang said.
"China-U.S. cooperation has never been a case of one party giving favor to the other, or one party taking advantage of the other. Both countries have benefited much from this cooperation," he stressed.
